What are the minimum conditions I can expect on board?

  • Food: Ships must carry sufficient good quality food and drinking water and supply it free during your engagement. Religious and cultural differences also have to be considered.
  • Health and safety: You are entitled to live and work in a safe and hygienic environment. If you are on a ship with five or more seafarers, you have to choose a seafarers’ safety representative for the ship’s safety committee.
  • Medical care: You must be able to protect your health and have prompt access to medical care, including dental care, if needed.
