Call for more support for maritime training in UK

21 July 2017

An independent review of maritime training in the UK has warned that seafarer numbers will decline unless government support increases.

Welcomed by maritime union Nautilus, the report on the Support for Maritime Training scheme carried out for the Department of Transport concludes that the scheme is “a valuable incentive to industry” and that cadet numbers would plummet if it was withdrawn. The report warns that the UK’s strength in the global maritime sector is threatened by such factors as its lower cost of training, the employment of foreign seafarers, and the increasing competitiveness by other countries in the industry.

The report recommends an increase in the Support for Maritime Training scheme to bring UK maritime training costs in line with other northern European countries.
