SeafarerHelp now available on Viber

23 March 2018

SeafarerHelp, the International Seafarers’ Welfare and Assistance Network (ISWAN) free, confidential helpline for seafarers, is now available on the instant messaging app Viber – which is said to have over 900 million users worldwide.

SeafarerHelp gives advice to seafarers on a range of queries, such as family issues, personal problems, unpaid wages, repatriation and health. In 2017, it assisted 8,862 seafarers of 92 different nationalities.

The helpline is already available through email, telephone, Live Chat, Facebook and WhatsApp. Contact through Viber has been added following feedback from seafarers; the app enables seafarers to get in touch from areas with low or no phone signal, and avoid SMS fees and calling charges.

SeafarerHelp is available on Viber from Monday to Friday between 8:00 and 18:00, UK time. Messages received outside these hours will be responded to during the monitored times. Seafarers and their families can contact SeafarerHelp by message or voice call on Viber at: +44 (0)7741 594549. For Android devices, the app can be downloaded at: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.viber.voip

For iOS devices, it is available at: https://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/viber-messenger-text-call/id382617920?mt=8

All other contact methods for SeafarerHelp, excluding WhatsApp, are available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year – visit https://seafarerhelp.org for contact details. (SeafarerHelp will always call seafarers back if they have no internet connection and are only able to phone.)
