Jail threats to Hebei Two

14 November 2008

The two crew members of the Hebei Spirit detained in South Korea could face jail following their current retrial for marine pollution and other offences following a large oil spillage from their vessel. The two Indian officers, Jasprit Chawla and Syam Chetan, were acquitted by a court in the original trial earlier this year, and were refused leave to return to their home pending the retrial.

The prosecutors have called for three-year jail sentences as well as fines. A high court judge will give the final verdicts in a few weeks time.
