IMO adopts recycling convention

22 May 2009

The International Maritime Organisation ended its week-long conference on ship recycling by agreeing on 15 May to adopt a new convention.

The International Convention for the Safe and Environmentally Sound Recycling of Ships should come into force 24 months after it meets the ratification criteria.

Although designed to set standards for the safe scrapping of ships, the convention has been criticised by environmental groups and campaigners who say that it will not end the pollution caused by the ship-breaking industries that takes place on the beaches of India, Bangladesh and Pakistan.
