Link line for retired UK seafarers

12 June 2009

Retired seafarers in the UK will be able to stay in touch with others through a new phone service that aims to overcome the isolation that often comes on retirement from a life at sea.

Seafarers Link is a free telephone-friendship project that links together up to eight callers every two weeks. Its director-general, Commodore Barry Bryant, said: "Our research has shown that many retired seafarers lose touch with former colleagues. Seafarers have had a unique set of life experiences and often face difficulties associated with isolation in old age – that is why Seafarers Link is so important."

Seafarers Link is being financed through the Maritime Charities Funding Group, which is made up of the ITF Seafarers Trust, Merchant Navy Welfare Board, Seamen's Hospital Society, Trinity House, Numast Welfare Funds and Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity. It has been set up in partnership with the Community Service Volunteers, Retired Senior Volunteers Programme and Community Network.
