Kormorant arrested as crew starved out
19 June 2009
"This is the worst case I've ever heard about." That was the verdict of Truls Hellenes, the ITF inspector in Norway, about conditions on board the German-owned Kormorant, which has now been arrested in the Norwegian port of Larvik.
Although the vessel carried just four crew – including the owner as master – it has been the focus for Norwegian media attention, as news emerged of the near-starvation conditions forced on the crew. The Russian and Polish seafarers have not been paid for two months.
When Truls Hellenes finally got to speak to the owner/captain on 10 June – having to confront a "frightening" dog on board, whose rabies certificate has since expired – he was told that there was no money to pay wages. He took the crew off the vessel after he heard that the master was harming them and that there was no food left for them.
The ship was arrested on 12 June and the crew were put up in a local guest house pending their repatriation. Lawyers for the owner are now threatening to sue the ITF inspector personally.
