EU piracy patrol to continue

19 June 2009

The European Union has agreed to extend anti-piracy patrols off Somalia for a further year, as the continuing threat shows little sign of ending.

The current Operation Atalanta, due to end on 13 December 2009, will now continue to December 2010. The operation involves naval vessels from Belgium, Britain, France, Germany, Italy, Greece, the Netherlands, Spain and Sweden.

The latest vessel to be hijacked in the region is the German-owned, Antigua and Barbuda-flagged Charelle, which was seized off Oman on 12 June. The crew of nine come from Fiji, New Zealand and Sri Lanka.

All attacks and suspicious sightings should be reported to the IMB Piracy Reporting Centre, Tel: +603 2031 0014 (24 hours), Email: imbkl@icc-ccs.org.
