Filipino crew win higher wages in Greece

29 January 2010

Twelve Filipino crew of the Greek-owned Aetea Sierra have won a hike in their wages, following a landmark decision by the Greek courts. The seafarers had been left stranded and unpaid in Greece since July 2009. A court order, issued on 21 December, said that their wages should be based on the Greek wage standard, which is about four times higher than they would have received under their contracts.

Following the ship owner's failure to pay up, the court has ordered the vessel to be auctioned off on 17 February and the proceeds used to pay the crew's wages.

The ITF has assisted with legal representation for most of the crew, as well as food, water, fuel and other necessities. They have also been supported by their embassy, which is arranging their repatriation.
