Ukraine to support striking seafarers

29 January 2010

Ukraine is coming to the aid of six Ukrainian seafarers who have been on strike in the port of Nakhodka, in Russia's Far East. The seafarers, from the 13-member crew of the Ukrainian-owned, Comoro Islands-flagged Sea Star, went on strike over a claim for three months' back wages. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Petro Poroshenko has now ordered his consul general in Vladivostok to assist the crew in resolving the dispute, including possible repatriation.

The ITF is assisting the seafarers, who are owed US$70,000, said ITF's inspector in Vladivostok, Petr Osichansky. The ITF will be pursuing arrest of the ship to ensure payment of the seafarers' back wages.

The coal-carrying vessel has also been found to have technical defects.
