ITF aids fishing crews in Spain

5 February 2010

ITF inspectors in Spain are helping to secure back pay for crews of fishing vessels investigated in Caramiñal on Spain's Atlantic coast.

The vessels – Bermeotarrak 4, Bermeotarrak 3 and Brago – are owned by the Spanish Pebertu company.

Inspectors Luz Baz and Mohamed Arrachedi have so far won €20,000 for three Spanish crew members of the Spanish-flagged Bermeotarrak 3. The other two vessels, which are Belize-flagged, have been arrested for other debts owed. The inspectors have already arranged a settlement of €12,000 for Ghanaian crew members.

The conditions of the fishers have received widespread coverage in the Spanish media.
