In recent years there have been many discussions within the maritime industry and concerns raised about the shortage of qualified seafarers.

In spite of the current economic crisis the shortage still exists and there are fears that when the industry recovers the shortfall will be an even bigger problem.

The ITF believes that a healthy industry with decent working conditions and a high level of retention is in everyone’s interest.

What do young seafarers think?

In order to address this problem, the ITF and its industry partners are keen to pinpoint what attracts young people to a career at sea and what factors are deterring young people from pursuing this career option.

In April 2009 the ITF, along with industry partner INTERTANKO, brought together a small focus group of young seafarers to get their views on what a maritime career is like today. For more information on this, please see the Related Pages in the box on the right of this page.
