IMO video promotes women in maritime

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has launched a video to promote the maritime industry as a career for women. Coinciding with this year’s Day of the Seafarer theme of gender equality, and the World Maritime Day theme of empowering women in the maritime community, the video, Turning the Tide, focuses on a “new generation of strong and talented women” coming into non-traditional jobs at sea, such as radio, communications and intelligence, and asserts that the maritime industries are for everyone: “It's not about your gender, it's about what you can do”.

The IMO runs a “Women in Maritime” programme to encourage women to enter careers in both shore-based and seagoing posts. The World Maritime University (WMU) has had more than 1,000 female graduates to date, and the IMO International Maritime Law Institute (IMLI) was the first United Nations body to require 50 percent of its places to be reserved for women.

Nearly 500 women from 152 countries also participate in the IMO’s seven regional associations for women in the maritime sector.

The Women in Maritime programme continues to work to address the challenges facing women coming into the maritime sector.
