More migrants feared drowned in the Mediterranean

31 March 2017

About 146 migrants and refugees were feared drowned after their rubber boat sank in the Mediterranean. There was one young survivor from the boat, which had set out from Libya to cross into European waters. He was picked up by a Spanish frigate and transferred to an Italian coastguard ship.

In the previous two days, rescuers had picked up more than 1,100 migrants at sea and recovered one body.

The International Organisation for Migration (IOM) says that nearly 600 migrants have died so far in 2017 trying to reach Italy from North Africa – more than 4,600 migrants are estimated to have died attempting the crossing in 2016.
