In April 2009, amidst speculation about the cause of the shortage of young people going to sea, the ITF, along with industry partner INTERTANKO, brought together a small focus group of young seafarers.

The purpose of this Focus Group was to get young seafarers’ views on what a maritime career is like today.

We felt that this could help us to identify and focus on the key challenges regarding attraction and retention in the shipping industry today.

On the right of this page, in Related Items, you will find the outcomes and recommendations of the Young Seafarers’ Focus Group, which met in London 6–8 April 2009, and other related material.

The meeting of Focus Group also coincided with the IMO’s ‘Go to sea!’ campaign, launched at the end of 2008. For more information on this campaign, see the Related Links to the right of this page.

One of the participants commented: “We would like to thank you for making us part of the conference. It really made us see our career in a brighter perspective”.
