Inside the Issues

Environmental Issues

Although shipping is the most environmentally friendly way of transporting goods around the globe, it must still take responsibility for its part in contributing to global warming and at the same time take care of the health and safety of the people working on board.

The ITF supports moves by the shipping industry to use cleaner fuels, but has concerns that the latest international agreements on the subject don't go far enough to tackle the issue. We want to see refineries producing enough clean fuel to supply the world's ships and not leave the responsibility with those on board to meet emissions requirements.

Well-run ships, with good conditions on board including high standards of health and safety, also tend to be at less risk of causing environmental hazards, such as oil spills.

Seafarers, in performing their work, shouldn’t be required by their employer to break environmental laws, for instance by emptying polluted ballast water into the sea.
