Continuing concern on detention of Hebei Spirit officers

7 November 2008

There is continuing concern over the detention in South Korea of two ship's officers held after the Hebei Spirit oil spillage. The two Indian officers were acquitted by a court earlier this year, but have been refused leave to return to their home.

The International Chamber of Shipping and the International Shipping Federation raised the concern of the shipping industry in a joint statement to the International Maritime Organisation Legal Committee in late October. The statement points out that South Korea's approach appears to be contrary to the joint IMO/ILO Guidelines on the Fair Treatment of Seafarers in the Event of a Maritime Accident.
