Piracy – dangers in other waters too

14 November 2008

While concern mounts about the dangers to shipping in the Gulf of Aden, attacks continue in other waters. There was relief for the crew of the Bourbon Sagitta, taken hostage by Cameroonian rebels on 31 October, who were released on 11 November. All 10 seafarers were safe, despite earlier reports that one had been killed by their kidnappers. Their kidnap had been condemned as a "gangster act" by the ITF Maritime Coordinator Steve Cotton.

Meanwhile, there are reports that four vessels have been attacked by pirates in the Singapore Strait in the last two months. In the latest incident, on 10 November, five pirates armed with machetes boarded the Indonesian-flagged tugboat, the Maju Daya 3, and robbed the crew of cash and personal belongings.

All attacks and suspicious sightings should be reported to the IMB Piracy Reporting Centre, Tel: +603 2031 0014 (24 hours), Email: imbkl@icc-ccs.org
