Warship captures pirates

22 January 2010

A Turkish warship turned the tables on Somali pirates by capturing six of them during an attack on an Indian ship in the Gulf of Aden on 16 January. The frigate sent in a helicopter and special forces after the Jal Layak came under machine gun fire. The vessel was sailing through the patrolled security transit corridor.

Somali pirates continue to hold hostage more than a hundred seafarers and dozens of captured vessels, with an increase in numbers since the start of 2010. The captives include a British couple whose yacht was seized in the Indian Ocean in October. The UK-Dutch maritime officers' union Nautilus is calling on the UK government to explain why it will not negotiate ransom payments for British seafarers held hostage.

Kidnap money is now a major source of income in some of the most poverty-stricken areas of lawless Somalia.

All attacks and suspicious sightings should be reported to the IMB Piracy Reporting Centre, Tel: +603 2031 0014 (24 hours), Email: imbkl@icc-ccs.org.
