ITF wins back pay for African fishing crew in Spain

19 February 2010

The ITF has won full back pay owed to the African crew of one of three fishing vessels inspected in Spain owned by the Pebertu company.

ITF inspectors Mohamed Arrachedi and Luz Baz negotiated to secure the full €18,270 owed to 17 African seafarers from the Spanish-owned, Belize-flagged Bermeotarrak 4, as well as their repatriation – they were due to go home on 16 February. The plight of the crew, whose ship was arrested on Spain's Atlantic coast, received widespread media coverage.

The ITF is now continuing negotiations to retrieve the back wages also owed to the Spanish crew members.
