Eastwind ship that abandoned crew fined for pollution

5 March 2010

The owner and captain of the Liberia-flagged Matterhorn – whose 15 crew were abandoned in Brittany, France last year – have been fined US$1.4 million for causing pollution off the Brittany coast.

The ITF came to the aid of the crew, who were left stranded in Brest in May 2009 after the owner, Eastwind Maritime, refused to pay a fine of €300,000 to leave the port.

The ITF applied for the ship to be arrested, and the crew were repatriated in September. The seafarers were helped by the French Maritime Special Fund, which paid them advances for their salary and the costs of repatriation to Russia and Ukraine. Eastwind went bankrupt in 2009, and the ship is expected to be sold to pay the fine.
