Maritime areas considered as war zones are declared by a body called the Joint War Committee (JWC).

This body is made up of underwriting representatives from Lloyd’s and IUA company markets and normally meets every quarter.

For the most recent JWC list see the link in the Related Pages area on the right of this page or visit one of the following websites.

In some collective bargaining agreements and employment contracts there are clauses which outline different terms and conditions that apply to seafarers when their vessel is trading in an area considered to be a war zone. For example a seafarer may be able to choose not to work within that zone and be repatriated without penalty. Or, for instance, a seafarer may be injured and may receive more injury benefits as a result of the injury happening while they were working within a declared war zone.

The ITF, for the purposes of most of its core agreements, uses the list issued by the JWC as its war zones.

For IBF agreements, the IBF’s own designated war zones apply. For the current list of IBF declared war zones see the link in the Related Pages area on the right of this page.

To find out if your ship is covered by an ITF or an IBF agreement, select “Look up a ship” from the tabs above.
