Question of the Week
What Should My Wages be?
Unfortunately, because the shipping industry is largely unregulated, your wages will normally depend on the kind of contract you have signed.
It is important that you do not sign a contract agreeing to wages that you are not happy with. Normally, if there is no other agreement in place - such as an ITF agreement – your contract will be legally binding.
There are internationally recognised minimums.
If your ship is covered by an ITF agreement, you are entitled to the ITF wages appropriate to that agreement. Please see the wage scale documents on the right of the page for the wage levels that apply to the core ITF agreements.
To find out if your ship is covered by an ITF agreement, please click on the Look Up a Ship tab above.
For national flag vessels, the ITF believes that no seafarer should be paid below the ILO level. Please see the wage scale documents on the right of the page for details of the ITF interpreted ILO wage levels.
