EU extends support for maritime security in Somalia

14 Dec 2018

The European Union (EU) has extended its maritime security mission in Somalia until the end of 2020. “EUCAP Somalia” has been an important factor in helping to develop and enforce maritime law in Somalia. This process of stabilisation has contributed to a dramatic reduction in the piracy that was once a threat to shipping off the coast of Somalia and into the Indian Ocean. The EU will provide funding of EUR66.1 million for the next two years of the mission.

In addition to diplomatic efforts, development support, humanitarian aid and law enforcement to help build the country, the EU’s naval force Operation Atalanta has been contributing to fighting piracy off the Somali coast.
