Women at Sea Webinar

Hosted by NSU on the 25 June 2026 an engaging discussion was had on the roles, challenges, and future of women in the maritime industry, explored from a range of perspectives.

Women @ Sea of Sri Lanka is a ground breaking initiative by NUSS National Union Seafarers of Sri Lanka to create more opportunities for women in the shipping industry. 

Inaugurated in 2019, it has been supported by the ILO, the government of Japan, and ITF affiliate Ver.di. 

 "We intend to widen the scope and placements for more women recruits and ensure they have a contract waiting at the end of their graduation.The demand if starting to grow. It's a huge step forward for Sri Lanka and the global seafarering community", said CEO of NUSS Boa Athu. 

Plans are underway to double the capacity of W@S for 2027 and several other ITF affiliates have expressed willingness to come forward and assist with this wonderful initiative. 

 

Women @ Sea of Sri Lanka is a ground breaking initiative by NUSS National Union Seafarers of Sri Lanka to create more opportunities for women in the shipping industry.
Inaugurated in 2019, it has been supported by the ILO, the government of Japan, and ITF affiliate Ver.di.
Fifty five (55) women, who are mostly youth from rural Sri Lankan communities, have so far successfully completed their training and are gainfully employed on a variety of vessels around the world.
