Medals for maritime trade unionists

07 Sep 2018

Maritime trade union members have been among the 19 recipients of the UK’s prestigious Merchant Navy Medal.

Nautilus general secretary Mark Dickinson received the award in recognition of his work on seafarer employment, training and welfare. Two other Nautilus members who were awarded the medal were Captain Belinda Bennett, the first black female shipmaster in the cruise industry, for services to the promotion of the maritime sector, and Princess Cruises master Captain Nick Nash, for services to maritime training.

The other winners included people honoured for their bravery, work with people with mental health and addiction problems, as well as seafarer welfare and charity work, promoting seafaring to young people, and scientific research.

Maritime minister Nusrat Ghani commented that the medal winners were: “a credit not just to the maritime industry but to the wider nation. They have gone above and beyond their duty for the benefit of others.”
