The report was based on the Women Seafarers’ Health and Welfare survey, a joint initiative by the ITF, the International Seafarers’ Welfare and Assistance Network (ISWAN), the International Maritime Health Association (IMHA) and the Seafarers Hospital Society (SHS).

The initiative, which was publicly launched on 28 September, puts forward seven concrete proposals the EC can take to improve working conditions and secure fair competition for law-abiding businesses in the different transport sectors.

ITF inspectorate co-ordinator Steve Trowsdale said: “We are pleased that Stolt Norway acted promptly to resolve the issues of non-payment to its Chinese crew on board the Stolt Kikyo of the coastal premium while trading in Australian waters.
The entire inspectorate network is brought together every three years to develop new skills and plan for the delivery of ITF objectives.
Magsaysay, which provides employment to 40,000 seafarers, has agreed to collaborate with the ITF to promote awareness and boost job opportunities for HIV-positive Filipino seafarers.
Transport workers from road and maritime sectors were joined by activists from oil and gas, manufacturing, construction and food and drink.
The programme is designed to bring together workers who are linked by the same geographical industrial hub - and part of the same supply chain - to give their unions more industrial power and influence over negotiations with management and decisions made by employers.
