Ship’s engineers found guilty of pollution cover-up

24 February 2017

A court in Charleston, South Carolina, USA has convicted two chief engineers from the Liberia-flagged chemical tanker Green Sky of pollution offences and falsifying documents to cover up the illegal discharge of oily waste.

The vessel’s Greek operator, Aegean Shipping Management, had previously pleaded guilty to pollution law violation and obstruction of justice, for which it had been fined USD2 million.
The court heard that in 2015 the Green Sky was regularly pumping contaminated and oily water directly overboard – through use of a “magic pipe” to bypass the ship’s oil water separator. Its oil record book was falsified to cover up these illegal discharges in at least two cases while the ship was transiting US waters between Pascagoula, Mississippi and Houston, Texas. The false records were uncovered by the US coastguard in Charleston following a tip-off by whistle-blowers.
