New seafarer ID comes into force

9 June 2017

The new internationally recognised identity document for seafarers came into force on 8 June 2017.

Under the International Labour Organization (ILO) revised convention 185, seafarers are able to use the new electronic passport-style ID to travel without a visa to join their ships and to disembark in ports to use shore facilities and take shore leave.

Thirty-two ILO member states have ratified convention 185; the latest were Montenegro and Sri Lanka.
