IMO celebrates 70 years

9 March 2018

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has just celebrated the 70th anniversary of its foundation with a prestigious event in its London, England head offices attended by HRH Queen Elizabeth II. The IMO convention was adopted on 6 March 1948 at a United Nations maritime conference, and its 70th year will be marked in events leading up to World Maritime Day in September, under the theme: "IMO 70: Our Heritage – Better Shipping for a Better Future".

The IMO says that the celebrations will be looking forward to the future of shipping and the challenges ahead, as well as commemorating the last 70 years.

Although the IMO convention was adopted in March 1948, it did not come into force until it was ratified by the 21st UN state in 1958. The IMO now has 173 member states and three associate members.

The annual Day of the Seafarer takes place on 25 June 2018. This year’s World Maritime Day parallel event will be hosted by the Polish government in June.
