Slovakia ratifies the MLC

8 June 2018

Slovakia has become the 87th member state of the International Labour Organization (ILO) to ratify the Maritime Labour Convention 2006, as amended (MLC, 2006). The MLC sets a comprehensive and innovative global standard for decent working and living conditions for seafarers.

Although Slovakia is a landlocked country, it supplies labour for the maritime industry. Its ratification brings closer the aim of collective backing for the MLC by all European Union member states. The convention will enter into force for Slovakia on 17 May 2019.

To date, the MLC has been ratified by states that represent approximately 91 percent of the world gross tonnage of shipping.
