More migrants cross English Channel

24 May 2019

More migrants have been found making the dangerous crossing of the English Channel from France to England in small boats. Although the traffic is on a far smaller scale than has taken place across the Mediterranean, and it is a much shorter crossing, the Channel is the busiest sea lane in the world.

Twenty migrants were found in one boat and 11 on a second small boat. A Border Force cutter intercepted a further boat carrying 19 people on board and handed them over to immigration officials. Since January, the UK has returned more than 25 people who arrived illegally in the UK in small boats to other countries in Europe.
